What to know about selling prepaid gift cards

Prepaid gift cards carry a payment network logo, such as Visa, Mastercard or American Express, and can be spent at many merchants that accept that network. That sounds more flexible than a store card, and in many ways it is. In practice, though, prepaid cards can be frustrating. Some online checkouts reject them, gas pumps and hotels may place holds bigger than the balance, and small leftover amounts are easy to forget.

Prepaid cards look like regular payment cards. Instead of a scratch-off code, they have a card number on the front, an expiration date and a security code. On most Vanilla and Zillions cards the security code is on the back. On American Express gift cards it is a four-digit code on the front. The bot will ask for each part one at a time and nothing more.

Activation matters a lot with prepaid cards. These cards only hold money after a cashier activates them at the register, and the store receipt is your proof that happened. Keep the receipt and any cardboard sleeve the card came in until your sale is complete.

You can check a prepaid balance on the official website or phone number printed on the back of the card, and checking does not spend it. Always type that address yourself. Fake balance check sites are a common trick aimed at prepaid card holders, and they exist only to collect your card details.
