What to know about selling travel gift cards

Travel gift cards are some of the most generous gifts people give. An Airbnb card for a honeymoon, a Turo card for a road trip, a graduation present meant to fund a first big adventure. Travel plans change all the time, though. A trip gets canceled, a family prefers hotels, someone already owns a car, or the card just waits for a vacation that keeps getting pushed back.

Travel gift cards often carry larger amounts than everyday store cards, which makes it worth handling them carefully. Most arrive by email, with the code in the message or on a linked page. Physical cards bought in stores usually hide the code under a scratch-off strip. Either way, do not add the code to your account. Once a travel code is redeemed, the credit belongs to that account and cannot be moved or sold.

Watch out for the difference between a gift card and a travel credit. A credit or coupon from a canceled booking is not a gift card, even if it looks similar inside your account. Only unredeemed gift card codes can be sold here.

Travel card rates are set daily per brand and depend on demand and the value of your card. The bot shows you the offer for your exact card before you agree, and you are always free to keep the card instead.

One more warning. Some scams target travelers directly: a fake host asks you to pay outside the app with gift cards, or a caller claims you won a trip and must pay a fee in cards.
